Upcoming Events

Guests and prospective members are welcome to all of our upcoming events and services!

Lunch and Learn: Responsa Literature
Wednesdays 12 noon - 1 p.m., starting March 17 with Rabbi Michael Pincus What does Judaism have to say about the morality of positive eugenics? Is genetic enhancement moral according to Judaism? Should a synagogue accept donations by Messianic Jews? If a Jewish child is baptized is he or she still Jewish? What do you do if a parent requests cremation and you are opposed to it, do you follow your parent’s or your wishes? Can you skype into a minyan? Does a ghetto home need a mezuzah? Since the middle ages, when local rabbis were asked by congregants faced with the difficult issues of applying Judaism to the challenges of the day, our people have collected a vast body of Responsa, answers to specific questions. It is a tradition that still continues today. Join us for this ten-week class that raises questions and provides challenging answers to today’s contemporary challenges. Classes will be independent of each other.

Some-thing from No-Thing
Wednesday, Marcy 17, 5 - 6 p.m.
(Part of our Religious School program, and entire community welcome!)
Presented by University of Hartford’s Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies During 2010-2011, the University of Hartford’s Greenberg Center will begin celebrating its 25th anniversary working in the Greater Hartford Community. In honor of the Center’s long term commitment to bringing works of Jewish civilization to the public, the Center commissioned a children’s opera from well-known composer Dr. Jody Rockmaker of Arizona State University. All Connecticut performances of Some-thing from No-thing are sponsored in part by the Greater Hartford Arts Council, the Greater Hartford Jewish Federation, the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies, the Waltman Family Fund, and the Jerry and Sally Wagner Fund at the University of Hartford. Some-thing from No-thing is his new children’s opera (for ages 7-70) based upon the beloved Jewish folk tale Epes fun Gornisht. In the story, a child receives a blanket at birth that is transformed throughout his life into a coat, a vest, a scarf, a hat, and finally a button. It is recycled until it finally exists only in his memory. It is a moral eco-drama for our times, about learning to live with less. The opera provides audiences with forty minutes of spirited music and dialogue and has an uplifting message for children and adults.
