Spare Change
Spare Change
is a project of our 7th graders who will work to collect for charities the equivalent of 1,005,000 dimes, one dime to honor each of the 1,000,000 Jewish children lost to The Holocaust and the 5,000 German children killed by their countrymen because they were born with disabilities.  Please support our 7th graders as they work to make the world a better place. It is so easy everybody can do it!  To learn more, click here.

Welcome to the Youth Education Program One Stop Shop for all your registration needs. You will find a wealth of information on this page! The best place to start is by reading the Letter From The Director-Fall 2009. We look forward to seeing our returning students, as well as welcoming new ones in the Fall. Have a safe and wonderful summer.

1)General Instructions for Signing up your child in our Religious School:

  • Please download and complete the forms and mail them back with your tuition payment and any fees associated with the classes. We cannot register your children until payment is received.

General Information, PreK - 7th Grades
We offer weekly classes of general Jewish Education for PreKindergarten through 7th grade. Our sessions are on Sundays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Grades 3 - 6 come on Sunday mornings and also have Hebrew Language lessons on Wednesday afternoons, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Congregants who live in the Farmington Valley may elect (as an alternative to the Wednesday session) to enroll in the Hebrew Language class at the Farmington Public Library. This is held on Tuesdays from 4 - 6 p.m. The time students start on Tuesday depends on what grade they are currently in. **If your child(ren) plan to attend Tuesday classes in Farmington please let Rachel Gilbert know in the Religious School Office.**

Grades 3-7 follow core courses of Hebrew, Israel, History and electives of their choice, pertaining to all walks of Jewish life. Students can choose by teacher, subject, or friends! Electives range from the awarding winning Harry Potter and Jewish Values, Israeli Art, History through the Art of Cooking, Jewish Life Cycles, Youth Choir and many more, varying from semester to semester.

B'nai Mitzvah Information

During the 5th grade, students will receive information about the Bar/Bat Mitzvah process. Follow this link to view a copy of the current Bar-Bat Mitzvah Manual, including a sample Bar Mitzvah agreement.

Special Programs for 6th & 7th grades
Our 6th and 7th Grade Conclave is a chance for students to retreat to one of our Reform camps and enjoy a weekend away from parents with clergy and youth leaders. The upcoming Conclave will take place from October 2nd-October 4th, 2009 at Camp Eisner in Barrington, MA. We are currently accepting deposits to hold a seat on the bus! Please contact Rachel Gilbert in the Religious School Office for more details at cbiyep@cbict.org or 860-233-8215 ext 233.

All students who reach the age of 13 are encouraged to become B'nai Mitzvah.
They follow an individual, year-long training program, which entails detailed knowledge of the liturgy, learning to chant Torah and Haftorah and one-on-one study with one of our rabbis. Check out our Youth Brochure for more cool youth activities!

Special Programs for 8th - 12th grades
The Journey Onward: 8th & 9th Grade Porgram:

Beginning in October 2009, we invite our 8th and 9th grade students to join a creative program that will offer continuing opportunities to learn about and enjoy their Jewish heritage in an environment that encourages discussion; social action; and thoughts on modern day dilemmas and solutions, even while building friendships in a warm and social atmosphere.

Our program will be held every Sunday, from 10:00AM to 11:30AM at CBI (with varying times for off-site events).  The curriculum, created, in part, by a committee of 7th and 8th grade students is wide ranging and tackles many of the issues that affect our student’s Jewish and secular lives. There will be opportunities for field trips, and we will invite guest speakers and facilitators, all in order to make this an exciting and challenging Jewish program, which will ensure your child’s continuing Jewish education in a nurturing and familiar environment.  There will be some emphasis on Social Action and the Repair of the World (Tikkun Olam), as well as many interactive social events.

THE GOAL of this program will be to provide further Jewish Education to 8th and 9th Grade students, making it relevant to the society in which we live and to prepare  them for a Jewish future in a secular world.  Starting in October it will be necessary to be enrolled in this program or a program of similar intent (i.e. Yachad)* in order to be eligible for our Madrichim program which will now only offer paid employment to our students in 10th grade and beyond (except for those students already enrolled in the present Madrichim program.)

Confirmation(Starting in 10th Grade):
It has been about three years since your Bar or Bat Mitvah. Where are you now?
Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to continue your Jewish Education. At confirmation you will enjoy:
-•A weekly class held every Monday where you will have be privileged to study with our rabbis.
-• Family dinners and presentations of topical interest.
-• An exclusive week-end trip to New York City, to enjoy theater and places of Jewish Worship, and a few delicious meals.
-• New friendships, and strengthen old friendships that you thought were forgotten when you were in 7th grade!
-• Opportunities to create your own programs and services.
-• Your picture displayed on the 'wall of confirmation' for decades to come. (bring your brides, grooms, family and friends to witness the photographs of your youth!)

Check out our Youth Brochure for more cool youth activities like Madrichim Programming (for assistant teenager teachers).

Music
There are many opportunities for students to experience the joy of music in this program. Click here to visit our Music and Arts page.

Mitzvot Opportunities
B'nai Mitzvah students are required to choose a community project that will benefit social groups who need financial or practical help. Ideas for mitzvot are on our Mitzvah page.

Family Education
We offer family education for PreKindergarten through 7th grade students and their parents. Programs range from Life Cycle, Jewish Philosophy, Talking to Your Children About G-D, as well as programming around the Holy Days and Festivals. These programs encourage children and parents to learn together, sometimes by parallel teaching and sometimes by coming together in a warm and encouraging environment experiencing learning through music, art, drama and text. Parents are encouraged to attend these programs with their children.
