In the Spirit of Shabbat
An Invitation to Become a Published Author!
We cordially extend an invitation to all of our talented CBI writers, established and emerging, all of you who have a drive to create imaginative poetry, short stories, and essays. We know you are out there! We are seeking poetry, essays, and prose that we will publish into a book at the end of the year.
The theme of our book is In the Spirit of Shabbat. We are looking for entries from congregants, ages 8 years and older, that convey what Shabbat means to you. Your theme does not have to be religious in nature. We are looking for entries that will illuminate the multiple meanings and significance that Shabbat has to our CBI community, and we are hoping the final book will educate and entertain both Jews and non-Jews.
Every submission that meets our guidelines will be published. Our review panel will also select four winning authors for special recognition and will be invited to give a reading of their work on Friday, November 12, 6:30 p.m., at our In the Center program before Shabbat Services.
Interested? Read our guidelines. Guidelines are also available in the Learning Center or by contacting Jane Zande, jane.zande@gmail.com, 860-233-8215 x230.
But get in gear now! Our deadline is Friday, October 1, and all submissions must postmarked or hand delivered (we are not accepting email submissions) by this date.
Every famous author started somewhere! Enter now and get your work published!

The Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Community Learning Center
The new Learning Center has Judaic resources located in one space and easily accessible. Over 13,000 volumes are held in the Deborah Library, making it one of the largest synagogue libraries in Connecticut. The Center also houses the Abraham J. Feldman Museum and the Marjorie L. Rafal archives, two treasures with artifacts of classic Reform Judaism in Connecticut from the past 160 years. The Center includes the Miller Media Center, with free wifi and public access computers, and an AV room, with a wide-screen monitor for projecting PowerPoint presentations, as well as for movies, Internet, and dish tv. There is also a bright and attractive children’s room with a mural hand-painted by local artist Carolann Dvorak.
In June 2009, the Learning Center received Advanced Accreditation by the Association of Jewish Libraries.
